Bill Belichick reportedly will only consider Cowboys boss Jerry Jones’ plea for a head coaching job in the NFL
Eric Canha-USA TODAY Sports

The upcoming NFL season will not be the same for the New England Patriots. The team will play its first season without Bill Belichick as its head coach in nearly three decades. What will make it more shocking is the fact that Belichick will not be coaching any team in the league, despite his undisputable status as the greatest defensive mind and head coach of all time.

Bill Belichick applied for the position of the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons franchise, but despite being a frontrunner up until the end, Arthur Blank decided to hand the job to Raheem Morris. This has put the future of the eight-time Super Bowl-winning coach in jeopardy. Will fans ever get to see him on the sidelines again?

As per ESPN ‘s Seth Wickersham, Jeremy Fowler, and Don Van Natta Jr, sources close to Belichick have revealed that he would be willing to coach just three teams in the NFL, the Dallas Cowboys, the Philadelphia Eagles, and the New York Giants. Out of all these teams, he is more inclined towards getting a shot to coach America’s team.

A source who spoke to the reporters also made Belichick’s thought process clear.

I don't think Bill Belichick will ever be a head coach again in the National Football League...Unless, it's (for) Jerry Jones . The source revealed

Bill Belichick is unlikely to coach in the NFL again unless it’s for the Cowboys

Bill Belichick’s decision indicates that in the event of Jerry Jones deciding to part ways with Mike McCarthy following the Wild Card Round loss of the Cowboys to the Packers, he would have been a frontrunner for the job. However, Jones decided to stick with McCarthy for one final year. To give him one last shot.

If this year, the team fails to make it to the Super Bowl, the possibility of Belichick taking over as the next coach of the Cowboys is very real. There are many reasons for his interest in the NFC East. Both the Philadelphia Eagles and the Dallas Cowboys have great defenses. Belichick being a defensive mastermind can make them invincible on defense, especially the Cowboys who dominated offenses this season.

If there is one clear thing, Jones is the most outspoken owner-operator in the NFL. A stark contrast to Belichick’s personality and behavior wherein he displays constant reluctance to speak to the media. That dynamic does seem plausible to work with because Jones is the face of the franchise whereas Belichick has for the longest time been working under the radar.

For this year, Belichick will get a well-deserved vacation. He is expected to try his hand at broadcasting as he is expected to sign a deal with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions and is expected to pen a book. It will be interesting to get Belichick’s insights during games, especially if he is set to feature on ManningCast.
