Oakland's Jack Gohlke has college basketball's wildest shot chart

Oakland's Jack Gohlke played a huge role in their stunning upset win over No. 3 seed Kentucky on Thursday night, hitting 10 3-point shots. He finished the game going 10-for-20 from behind the arc, and those 20 3-point shots were his only shot attempts of the night.

He never attempted a field goal inside the arc, nor did he make much of an effort to get there.

That is not a new development.

Gohlke has made his living at Oakland this season by raining 3-point shots almost every time he touches the basketball. That is not hyperbole or an exaggeration, either. This is what he does.

Just look at his shot location and marvel at the consistency of his game.

That is 355 total field goal attempts, with 347 being 3-point attempts.

His 20 attempts on Thursday matched his season high, as did his 10 successful shots.

The real question that needs to be asked here is what happened to those outlier mid-range shots and why he took them — especially the one on the right, which is probably just a foot or two inside the 3-point line. Did he get bored? Did he lose track of where he was on the floor? That is not a typical Jack Gohlke shot.

The rise of analytics in sports has made the mid-range jump shot more of a curse than a strategy as teams look to either work the ball into the paint for high-percentage shots or go for value and the reward that comes with the 3-point shot. Gohlke has taken the latter to the extreme.

It has also been successful. He made 37% of his shots for the season and was even better on Thursday. That is a big reason why his team is advancing.
